Given the state of the housing market and the daily news, it's no surprise to see new 'win a house' competitions pop up regularly. We've seen a number of these coming out of the UK over recent months and this one is very similar to those that have been run already. Answer a simple question, buy a ticket for £25 (around $44) and hope you're the lucky person to win Jack and Jan Hope's £235,000 (currently around $410,000) home in Rochester.
Jack and Jan Hope are trying to emulate the success of the recent Win a Devon home competition, where a total of 46,000 tickets were successfully sold by a British couple. At the time, some experts suggested that this was a form of lottery, but that didn't stop Brian and Wendy Wilshaw from selling all the tickets they were hoping.
This couple have seen the UK housing market slow down considerably, and decided to put their own home in Rochester up for a similar competition. All players need to do is answer the following simple question, then purchase a ticket on the site: "Where are the next summer olympics to be held? New York, Paris or London.". The competition is scheduled to run until 30 June 2009 and a total of 10,000 tickets are to be sold. If the couple doesn't manage to sell all tickets in time, a winner is picked and a cash prize handed out instead.
Jack and Jan Hope have also set up a Facebook group page for this competition, in the hope it will attract more support online. You can find this competition on Jack's own website, Jacks Car Parts. The couple is also giving away free tickets by designating certain tickets numbers ahead of time, and refunding anyone buying those tickets over time. You can also find another competition on Jack's website where they are presumably giving away the land where they intended to have a holiday home in Bulgaria, which ends in July 2009 (1000 tickets for sale at £20 each).
Some might argue the level of skill required to enter this new competition is even lower than in the Wilshaw's competition, however it seems we haven't seen the last of this type of competition in current market conditions.
What do you think, should we expect to see more of these types of competitions in the coming months, given the credit crunch?
